Ashlei Hardenburg-Cartagena is a queer German-Puerto Rican writer/director from Jersey City, NJ. Raised in the armpit of America, she focuses her work on gritty crime dramas and introspective musicals. Her characters often explore identity and belonging by navigating constrictive spaces and pushing themselves beyond boundaries.

Ashlei's musical short film A SINGLE EVENING was an official selection in the 2020 Women's Film Festival and the 2020 Wicked Queer: Boston's LGBTQ Film Festival, among many others. She directed the short thriller ROLE OF A LIFETIME, which is available on the streaming platform LesFlicks. Ashlei has a B.F.A. in Film from Vassar College and finds guilty pleasure in karaoke and historical dramas.
